Category: Clinics
Announcement: Rattlesnake Avoidance Clinic 25 and 26 April 2015. If you enjoy activities that take you and your dog into wild places, you and your pet may be at risk for encountering rattlesnakes. You may have enough sense to avoid snakes but natural curiosity puts many dogs at risk of a venomous bite causing excruciating pain, expensive medical treatment, and possible death. Avoidance training can help you and your loved ones avoid a tragedy. The benefit to the dog is obvious but once the dog knows to avoid rattlesnakes it can alert you to their presence as well. The goal is that your dog develops an aversion to snakes. Live rattlesnakes are used in a natural setting for maximum effect. Your dog will learn the sight, sound, and smell of rattlesnakes. Experienced dog trainers handle the dogs. A licensed snake handler will provide course safety. We recommend dogs be at least 6 months of age. Puppies under 6 months require evaluation prior to training; alternate methods are available. Dogs must be in good health and current on all vaccinations. This clinic will be held in Sutter County on April 25, 2015, and April 26, 2015. Paid attendees will be provided with the location, directions, and their appointment time prior to the clinic. Announcement: Three 1-Day All-Breed Seminars with Laurin Howard

Friday, June 26, 2015: Understanding Your Standard

Saturday, June 27: Conformation Handling Basics

Sunday, June 28: Advanced Conformation Handling

Monday, June 29: Private lessons

ADOG Chamblee (Atlanta), GA. Indoors, air-conditioned, and fully matted

Friday: Understanding Your Standard (12 workers, no auditors): Terminology and structure begin a very full day of learning to understand and apply a breed standard to your own dog. In addition to a hands-on “parts of the dog” lesson, we discuss canine terminology and view the Rachel Page Elliott video Dogsteps. We devote the afternoon to reading an unfamiliar standard and dividing into teams for hands-on evaluation of dogs of that breed, viewing slow-motion video of the dogs (if available), and learning to evaluate and judge them. After groups present their results, participants will evaluate their own dogs for structure, breed type, and movement as described in their own standard and present to the class. http://www.adog-ga.com/ai1ec_event/conformation-howard-2/?instance_id=13261

Saturday: Conformation Handling Basics (15 workers; unlimited auditors. This approximately 8-hour seminar reviews the 4 basic handling techniques—baiting, stacking, gaiting, and patterns—in a systematic and easily understandable way. Questions are encouraged at all times. Only the most advanced handlers do not benefit from this seminar. Handouts included.http://www.adog-ga.com/ai1ec_event/conformation-howard/?instance_id=13262

Sunday: Advanced Conformation Handling (15 workers; unlimited auditors). For advanced students, this approximately 8-hour seminar takes the basic handler to the next level. We build on the 4 essentials above and add techniques to increase the handler’s skill and to emphasize dog–handler teamwork. Handlers learn about highlighting virtues and hiding faults; dress; ring strategy; and training techniques. Each student is videoed at the start and end of the day for viewing by the entire class. Handler criteria for Advanced working spot: Adults who have won at least 2 majors (not necessarily with same dog) and who are comfortable in the ring. Juniors who have won 3 or more Best Junior awards. Anyone in this class must use a well-trained dog. http://www.adog-ga.com/ai1ec_event/seminar-all-breed-basics-advanced-conformation-handling-with-laurin-howard/?instance_id=13263
