Dennis showed dogs for the first time in 1952, when he exhibited a Yorkshire Terrier. In the early 1970's, he was a licensed all breed handler and continued handling as a livelihood until Jan 2000 at which time he applied for judging approval.

Over the years as a handler, he and his wife, Mary Lou, also a judge, completed championships on about one thousand dogs in one hundred and nine breeds. They have owned and bred champions in several breeds including Lakeland Terriers and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers in which they remain active along with West Highland White Terriers. Other breeds which they have owned and bred include Afghan Hounds, Dachshunds, English Cocker Spaniels, Bull Terriers and Lhasa Apsos.

Dennis is a graduate of the Ohio State University and is currently an investment representative associated with Edward Jones Investments.
