Doris Miller always had a Collie as a pet and always wanted to someday breed and raise Collies. Given her first registered tri-color bitch by Betty Custer and Roy Stevens, she proceeded to train her for obedience (after training her nine-year-old male "Rex" to a CD in three straight shows). The Collie obtained her UD degree as did her champion-sired daughter and from there Doris became interested in conformation. She began breeding Collies in 1961 and through the years had several Champion Collies. She also bred Doberman Pinschers, showing one that finished.
Ms. Miller began judging obedience in 1964 and obtained approval to judge all obedience classes. In 1972 she obtained her Collie breed approval and from there has finished out the Herding Group as it is now, along with Doberman Pinschers in 1979. She has judged in Canada, Argentina, Alaska and the U.S. Ms. Miller has retired from active showing as she is now taking care of a 95-year-old father and 88-year-old-mother, besides having two Dobermans as house guards.
Ms. Miller has twice been elected to judge obedience at the Collie and Doberman National Specialties and recently in 1996 judged the Australian Shepherd National Specialty, which drew the largest Best of Breed class ever.
